Land, Energy, Water workshops.

Earlier this month, CCG -Zambia was very happy to host two days of workshops, organised by partners at the Centre for Energy, Environment and Engineering Zambia, Tec Analytics, UCL and The University Of Zambia (UNZA).

The theme was understanding and developing an integrated approach to the management of land, energy and water resources under climate change.

Day One was dedicated to land-use modelling. We discussed detailed land-use change dynamics and future scenarios. How can we model the land changes that may arise from different future trends in agriculture and forestry practices, urbanisation, mining and infrastructure?

Our model will soon be published for anyone to use and develop (see our Slides) so watch our social media for that.

Day Two was on the climate-land-energy-water nexus. Stakeholders from across these sectors came together to discuss ways in which their goals and challenges interact, how they could make policy more coherent and what research needs they all have.

Big topics included how to manage water for increased irrigation along with hydropower and other demands; how to develop bioenergy strategies along with food production and sustainable forestry; and the impacts of droughts on energy, food and forests.

We will be using our work and the workshop inputs to formulate a research agenda. See more Slides.

Our sincere thanks to everyone who took part (including Nancy Serenje Ng’oma, Clement Njobvu, Bernard Tembo, Jen Cronin, Steve Pye, Kabwe Mubanga, Clement Sichimwa, Muchima Mulunda, Julia Tomei). We look forward to formalising the outcomes of the workshops and following up on them.
