Mathias is a research assistant in Climate Compatible Growth at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment. His research, which focuses on the role of public and blended finance for climate resilience and adaptation, forms part of CCG’s work stream on Economics and Policy (WS5). He also contributes to the Resilience and Development research theme at the Environmental Change Institute and holds additional affiliations with Oxford Net Zero and the Institute of New Economic Thinking (INET) at the Oxford Martin School. His research interests lie at the intersection of environmental and development economics with a methodological focus on policy evaluation, microeconomic theory, inferential statistics, and spatial data. He is particularly interested in policies that jointly address environmental sustainability and human development in lower- and middle-income country contexts; for example, by strengthening resilience in local communities, investing in biodiversity and ecosystem services, and promoting a climate just, pro-poor transition towards (and beyond) net-zero. Mathias received his B.A. in European Studies from the Maastricht University in 2018, an M.Sc. in Public Policy and Human Development jointly awarded by UNU-MERIT and Maastricht University in 2021, and an M.Sc. in Economic and Financial Research from Maastricht University in 2023. Before coming to Oxford, Mathias formed part of the Development Economics Group at ETH Zurich.
