Annual CLEWs Steering Committee Meeting
The annual CLEWs Steering Committee meeting took place at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy on 16 August 2024. This gathering brought together representatives from international organisations – the IAEA and UNDESA – as well as universities – Imperial College London (UK), KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Loughborough University (UK), Simon Fraser University (Canada), Strathmore University (Kenya), Taita Taveta University (Kenya) and University College London (UK).
The meeting provided the opportunity for partners to update each other on important CLEWs developments over the last year. These included the development of a new Model User Interface for OSeMOSYS (MUIO) used in applying the CLEWs framework.
Participants exchanged information on active capacity building initiatives led by CCG, IAEA and UNDESA, and explored collaboration on the development and streamlining of training materials across the CLEWs community.
Roundtable sessions allowed partners to share ongoing initiatives and project developments, and exchange ideas on code development and management practices within the CLEWs community, emphasizing their commitment to transparent collaboration.
The Steering Committee learned of CCG’s plans to support the upgrading of CLEWs skills via a new Energy Modelling Community, which will provide practitioners in the Global South with troubleshooting support and ongoing skills development, and will be supported by a network of expert mentors, training resources, and collaborative tools to ensure continuous knowledge sharing and capacity building.
This meeting reinforced the collective dedication to advancing the CLEWs framework and fostering collaboration among energy modelling experts and sponsoring institutions. The group looks forward to building on these discussions in the coming year and sharing future developments with the broader community.
