2025 February: EMP-Global Impact #8 Sultan Turut Balioglu

Sultan is a senior energy expert and energy lawyer in the Turkish Energy Market Regulatory Authority where she has worked for almost 15 years.  She attended the EMP-G at ICTP in Trieste in September 2024 to study the Electricity Transition Playbook pathway, which is where we spoke to her. 

2025 February: Sugandha Srivastav shares her research into corruption.

CCG’s Sugandha Srivastav has been undertaking research into the availability and transparency of energy contracts and data. In some cases a lack of openness points to potential corruption which may be artificially inflating prices for the ordinary person.       

2025 February: Story behind the paper: Adam Hawkes on: MUSE: An open-source agent-based integrated assessment modelling framework

CCG Director of Research, Adam Hawkes, is part of the team who wrote the above paper presenting MUSE, a new modelling framework which has been successfully trialled in the UK and Brazil.

2025 January: The story behind the paper with Steve Pye

In the week when Russian gas ceased to flow into Europe via Ukrainian transit routes, a new paper in Nature Communications explored future prospects for Russian gas exports given a near complete shutdown of the European market, which in 2021, accounted for 66% of its pipeline exports. We talk to Steve Pye to find out more about the inspiration for the paper, the experience of working with a new team and the implications of the work for other stakeholders.

2025 January: The story behind the paper with Fernando Plazas Nino

Fernando Plazas Nino discusses the paper: “Informing sustainable energy policy in developing countries: An assessment of decarbonization pathways in Colombia using open energy system optimization modelling” which he wrote with CCG colleagues R. Yeganyan, C. Cannone, M. Howells and J. Quirós-Tortós. It was published in ScienceDirect Volume 50.

2025 January: EMP-Global Impact #6 Arinaitwe Prossie:

‘Prossie’ is a Power System Engineer with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, Uganda. She works mainly in the Rural Electrification Department which was formerly the Rural Electrification Agency. ‘Prossie’ followed the MAED track at the EMP-G in Trieste in September 2024 which is where she spoke to CCG’s Peter Allen.

2025 January: EMP-Global Impact #5 Peace Peters from Nigeria discusses his entrepreneurial plans and ambitions to tackle the climate crisis. We spoke to him at the EMP-G in 2024 where he was studying the Electricity Transition Playbook.  

2024 December: CCG Bootcamps add another dimension to Capacity-Building Rudolf Yeganyan explains the purpose of the newly launched CCG Bootcamps – a capacity-building tool for teams working on real-world clean energy projects.  

2024 December: Looking back at COP29 from a Transport point of view. Holger Dalkmann, CCG’s lead on Sustainable Transport, attended COP in Azerbaijan as part of our small team. He shares his reflections in this blog, plus some hopes for what might happen at next year’s COP.  

2024 November: EMP-Global Impact #4 – Felix Akello – We speak to Felix Akello, who is an Energy and Environment Specialist working with the County Government of Kisumu  – one of 47 sub-national governments in Kenya. Kisumu County hosts the City of Kisumu which is the third largest city in the country. At Trieste, Felix followed the Energy Access Explorer track.  

2024 November: EMP-Global Impact #3 – Cynthia Omondi – Cynthia is a PhD student from Kenya, keen to support her country’s clean energy transition and also determined to help others with her own not-for-profit.

2024 October: Women in Energy Modelling Webinar is a Big Success: Vivien Foster reflects on the panel discussion on the barriers to women in this space and how we can support each other.

2024 October: Meet the team behind the paper: Carla Cannone and Elizabeth Tennyson discuss “Addressing challenges in long-term strategic energy planning in LMICs”.

2024 October: EMP-Global Impact #2 – Nathan Awuapila. Nathan Awuapila has worked for the Energy Commission of Nigeria for 14 years and here he discusses his work with energy modelling tools including MAED and MESSAGE.

2024 October: Meet the CCG Team #3 – Dr Karla Cervantes Barrón. Karla has worked in CCG since the beginning. At CCG she is involved in a variety of themes, including leading or overseeing several projects on energy and material efficiency as well as co-leading CCG’s Critical Minerals work.
