EMP-LAC 2024 (English)
The main objective of the EMP-LAC 2024 is to contribute to creating optimised investment business cases for the energy transition in the region. Attracting this investment will meet the continent’s growing demand for low-carbon, inclusive, and climate-resilient development pathways whilst making use of its own large resource base. It is an excellent opportunity to acquire free training, join discussion forums with your peers, and receive coaching in models and tools for energy planning needs.
To date, two EMP-LAC events have taken place, namely EMP-LAC 2022 (online) and EMP-LAC 2023 (hybrid). To accommodate growing participation and overwhelming demand for more of these dedicated sessions, most of the tracks have been translated into Spanish to increase their use. Please note, however, that the majority of training sessions will be conducted in English (there will be Spanish/Portuguese speakers/trainers on hand to assist).
EMP-LAC 2024 will take place from 15 January to 2 February 2024 as an in-person event (with the first week of training online only). In-person training will take place from 22 to 31 January in the city of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, and be followed by a day of high-level meetings. The event is co-hosted by Climate Compatible Growth, Universidade Federal Fluminense, and Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora.
Funding will be made available for in-person participants to cover the cost of travel, accommodation, and lunch. Participants who can fund themselves are encouraged to apply and select in the application that they will be self-funding.

Before you apply
As part of the application, you must attach the following:
- A stamped letter from your institution, endorsing your commitment to attend your chosen module [see guidance document for details]
- A letter of motivation explaining your own reasons for wishing to take the course and how it will impact your work and ability to affect policy making in your country
- An Open University certificate of completion for “Modelling, policy, and political economy” [link opens in new tab. All candidates must complete; freely available on the Open University collection].
- An Open University certificate of completion for your relevant track unless you are applying for “Net Zero Playbook”, “Input-Output-based Life-Cycle Assessment with MARIO” or “Spatial Data Management and Analytics for integrated Energy Planning”. The links for the relevant tracks are free via the Open University (OU) [Links open in a new tab – Spanish versions of some courses available. See Spanish section]:
Once completed, you will receive a certificate from the Open University. The certificate must be attached to your application form.

EMP-LAC 2024 (Español)
El principal objetivo de la EMP-LAC 2024 es contribuir a crear casos de negocio de inversión optimizados para la transición energética en la región. Atraer esta inversión permitirá satisfacer la creciente demanda del continente de vías de desarrollo bajas en carbono, inclusivas y resilientes al clima, al tiempo que se aprovecha su propia gran base de recursos. Se trata de una excelente oportunidad para adquirir formación gratuita, participar en foros de debate con sus homólogos y recibir entrenamiento en modelos y herramientas para las necesidades de planificación energética.
Hasta la fecha, se han celebrado dos eventos EMP-LAC, a saber, EMP-LAC 2022 (en línea) y EMP-LAC 2023 (híbrido). Para dar cabida a la creciente participación y la abrumadora demanda de más de estas sesiones dedicadas, la mayoría de las pistas se han traducido al español para aumentar su uso. No obstante, tenga en cuenta que la mayoría de las sesiones de formación se impartirán en inglés (habrá formadores/hablantes de español/portugués disponibles para ayudar).
EMP-LAC 2024 tendrá lugar del 15 de enero al 2 de febrero de 2024 como evento presencial (con la primera semana de formación sólo en línea).
