Green Grids Initiative Chief Operations Officer – deadline 2 September 2024

The Climate Compatible Growth Programme (CCG) has secured a Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) grant for The Green Grids Initiative (GGI) Secretariat project, running from August 2024 to 31 March 2025.

GGI is tackling one of the most important, complex and challenging problems facing the planet today – accelerating the construction of the new grid infrastructure needed for a world powered by renewable energy. We are looking for an exceptional Chief Operations Officer (COO) to drive a new ambitious phase of delivery and growth for the initiative.

About the role:

GGI is a global ecosystem bringing together policymakers, politicians, financiers, investors, academics and innovators to accelerate the transition to net zero by driving action on the development and financing of green grids and interconnectors. As we say, “There is no transition without transmission”.

This role involves managing and supporting a high performing team with a strong commitment to the green energy transition to drive global systems change. The COO will work as part of a four-person leadership team in the GGI Secretariat, working directly with the Head of Secretariat, to drive delivery across the GGI team.

This is a full-time, short-term consultancy (self-employment) contract until 31 March 2025 (project extension beyond this point is subject to further funding).  This role supports flexible work arrangements and might involve international travel.

Activities and Deliverables:

  • Act as the operations focal point to drive day-to-day execution of the GGI strategic vision and work plan
  • Manage staff and coordinate across teams to ensure operations are aligned and efficient
  • Work with the Head of Secretariat and Advisory Board on strategic forward planning
  • Set up structures for effective stakeholder management and drive growth of the ecosystem
  • Liaise with the Programme Support team to ensure appropriate governance and reporting
  • Facilitate high-level representation for stakeholder engagements
  • Act as the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) focal point.

The Successful Candidate will:

  • have 8+ years of professional experience or equivalent
  • have strong skills in operations, coordination, and programme management
  • have proven people management capabilities, exceptional team leadership skills and the ability and desire to develop others in their careers
  • demonstrate an exceptional understanding of complex systems, the ability to manage a wide array of stakeholders concurrently, and the ability to draw on our ecosystem’s capabilities to drive delivery
  • be able to work with the Leadership Team to secure additional funding and manage forward planning as the organisation scales up

Previous experience in climate policy, public policy, energy systems or green investment is a benefit, but not essential.
