Overview
CCG has been working with Ghana since November 2022, as CCG’s fifth partner country. Our academic and coordinating partners are The Brew-Hammond Energy Centre at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (TBHEC-KNUST), officially established in August 2023.
We have been working with our collaborators to discuss key priorities and practical modes of engagement to ensure we avoid duplicating work and contribute meaningfully to the energy, transport and finance sectors.
In May 2024, CCG will had its Energy Modelling Platform – Africa (EMP-A 2024) in Ghana. The event was hosted in collaboration with the Ghana Energy Commission, Ministry of Energy, and Ghana Atomic Energy Commission. Each year, CCG runs ‘Summer Schools’ to build practical knowledge of how to use the various Energy Modelling tools that we offer such as OSeMOSYS, MAED and IRENA’s FlexTool. A full list of our Energy Modelling Offer is available here.

Ghana Special Interest Groups (SIGs)
On 25 July a meeting was held to develop the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) needed to deliver research- solutions for each of the areas Ghana has asked to be addressed. SIGs have been created for each of these areas:
SIG1: Financing the Energy Transition (Ms Charlotte Asiedu and Dr Ellis Akwaa-Sakyi)
- Current Activities: While initial steps have been taken to establish a communication channel, the group has yet to initiate specific activities.
- Future Plans: The group is in the planning stage for financing workshops to explore innovative financing mechanisms tailored to Ghana’s clean energy sector.
SIG 4: Clean Cooking (Dr Rejoice Ntiriwaa and Ransford Sackey)
- Current Activities: Focus is on clean cooking advocacy and training. A planned collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and the Energy Commission aims to provide training for cookstove manufacturers, ensuring product quality and compliance with clean energy standards.
- Future Plans: Beyond training, the group will drive awareness and advocacy for clean cooking technologies, engaging women, NGOs, and academic partners to ensure that clean cooking is accessible to all.
SIG2: New Energy Vehicles and Sustainable Transport (Dr Godwin Ayetor)
- Current Activities: The SIG has recently completed the first phase of training for university graduates on e-mobility, which included certification packages across competency levels. Participants also completed internships with e-mobility companies, enhancing their practical skills.
- Future Plans: Due to high demand, the group aims to organize additional training sessions, including a proposed Level 3 competency training in Accra, pending funding. Plans are underway to lead a national conference on sustainable transport in collaboration with the Energy Commission, providing an independent platform for stakeholders across govern
SIG3: Green Hydrogen (Dr Patrick Boakye and Dr Latifa)
- Current Activities: The group is exploring hydrogen production methods suitable for Ghana, emphasizing environmentally friendly sources such as biomass. Discussions have been held with international experts, and a public webinar is tentatively scheduled for mid-November to share insights and promote hydrogen as a potential commodity.
- Future Plans: The SIG aims to study the European Green Hydrogen Skills Strategy and adapt relevant aspects for Ghana, exploring potential collaborations to position hydrogen as an exportable resource within the global south.
SIG5: Inclusive Net-Zero Emissions Future (Dr Robert Sogbadji)
- Current Activities: The group is focusing on policy support for clean energy solutions. Initial activities include gathering data on stove manufacturers and clean cooking technology efficacy.
- Future Plans: The SIG aims to strengthen local markets for green energy technologies, particularly by enhancing the competitiveness and affordability of solar-to-hydrogen initiatives. They also plan to collaborate with the Ministry of Transport to address infrastructure needs for EV charging stations.

Research
Current Research activity in Ghana includes the following:
The Southern Partnership Fund project on Political economy of land for solar in Ghana is progressing positively with various primary data gathering activities being conducted in addition to the ongoing literature review. For instance, the Ghanaian team has visited ten solar sites in Ghana, meeting with various stakeholders. Interviews have also been conducted with community representatives and developers.
These activities have initially produced useful insights, and data collection activities will continue to be undertaken in Quarter 4. The Ghanaian team presented the research at a seminar to the MSc Sustainable Resources students in January 2024. The key findings were presented at a dissemination workshop in March in Ghana, with our colleague Julia Tomei attending online. A draft report and policy brief have been written and are undergoing review.
