Energy Modelling Platform – Global
The Joint Global Training School takes place at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste. Find out more on the ICTP website.
The Energy Modelling Platforms (EMP) are fundamental elements of the CCG Programme. Through them, and the training they provide to professionals in the Global South, those countries can empower themselves to collect relevant data, undertake their own analysis, and produce credible investment proposals for their clean energy infrastructure projects. EMP’s role in what we call ‘capacity building’ is crucial.
This page outlines upcoming events, provides links for further details, and gives some details about the overall Energy Modelling Platform.
Please note, applications for EMP Latin America and the Caribbean are now open!
These initiatives pre-date CCG, having begun with the good will of various international organisations and universities jointly offering free training on open-source energy modeling tools, via the Open Tools, Integrated Modelling and Upskilling for Sustainable Development (OpTIMUS) Community.
OpTIMUS community members include the WBG, UNDESA, UNECA, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, IAEA, Simon Fraser University, IRENA, SEforALL, and others.
CCG began supporting this initiative from 2020, and in cooperation with the OpTIMUS community have since held nine capacity-building events. Each year we expand our activities and vary the geographical locations of the events, to make them accessible to more practitioners. The first event coordinated by CCG, namely the ‘ICTP Joint Summer School 2020’ (now EMP-Global), saw the offer of 5 courses, with the course being provided online due to COVID-19. In 2023, this event offered 10 courses, and was delivered fully in person. Now the programme has expanded, and the Energy Modelling Platform has events in Africa and the Latin America and the Caribbean region, and aims to expand to Asia and the Pacific in 2024.
The expansion of these capacity-building events over the years has been fuelled by demand, partnerships, and trust.
Every single capacity-building event launched by CCG sees more and more applications, with the initial events attracting around 100, and the last event having more than 350 applicants. New partnerships with international organisations are also being formed, leading to further expansion and new courses. Some organisations, such as the International Energy Agency (IEA) and Sustainable Energy For All (SEforALL) hold their technical assistance programmes using the CCG capacity-building events.
Lastly, international stakeholders trust CCG to facilitate capacity building in the global south. This is reflected in the fact that 65% of the funding used for the capacity-building events up to this point originated from co-funding.
Alongside high levels of satisfaction from participants (90%+ would recommend courses to a colleague), these events are starting to have a real impact on research and policy. Numerous research papers have been published, university courses are being established, and national energy transition plans are being formed, all using the tools, training and knowledge gained from CCG capacity-building events.
