EMP-X is a next-generation capacity building initiative under the Energy Modelling Platform (EMP), designed to enable institutions to host their own national or regional capacity building events.

Led in collaboration with CCG, EMP-X provides a structured, high-quality framework for delivering in-person training in open-source energy modelling tools, tailored to country-specific needs and priorities.

It brings together:

  • Governments
  • Universities
  • Energy professionals
  • Financial institutions
  • Researchers

into a single, hands-on learning environment focused on real-world energy planning and investment decisions

Why EMP-X

EMP-X exists to:

  • Build local capacity in energy modelling and planning
  • Support evidence-based investment decisions
  • Strengthen regional communities of practice
  • Promote open-source tools for climate and SDG alignment
  • Develop centres of excellence in energy planning

At its core, EMP-X is about turning knowledge into institutional capability.

What Does an EMP-X Look Like?

An EMP-X is a two-week, in-person training programme, structured around practical learning and real-world application.

Week 1

  • Hands-on training in selected modelling tools
  • Guided sessions led by expert trainers
  • Initial development of case studies

Week 2

  • Advanced application and refinement
  • Development of country-relevant outputs
  • Final presentations and stakeholder engagement

Participants don’t just learn tools, they build outputs that matter.

Training Tracks

EMP-X events can deliver only approved CCG training tracks, including:

  • OSeMOSYS & IRENA FlexTool
  • CLEWs (Climate, Land-Use, Energy and Water Systems)
  • OnSSET / Global Electrification Platform
  • MAED (Energy Demand Modelling)
  • FINPLAN (Energy Investment Planning)
  • Energy Access Explorer (EAE)
  • Geospatial energy modelling tools
  • Clean cooking modelling (OnStove)
  • MicroGridsPY and RAMP
  • Electricity Transition Playbook

Each EMP-X selects tracks based on country needs and institutional priorities
