Gerald Arhin is a Research Fellow at University College London (UCL) specialising in the political economy of climate compatible development. His research examines the governance of critical minerals—resources essential to the global energy transition—interrogating pivotal questions surrounding power dynamics, equity considerations, and policy frameworks that shape just and sustainable energy transitions.
Gerald holds a PhD in Development Policy and Management from the University of Manchester and brings strong experience in policy development and academic research. His work focuses on extractive governance, just transitions, and disability-inclusive development across socio-political contexts in Africa, with particular emphasis on Ghana, Kenya, and Zambia.
On the CCG programme, Gerald is part of the Political Economy Unit, the Equity and Governance Research Community, and the GESI (Gender Equality and Social Inclusion) Unit. His research contributes to developing frameworks for integrating political economy dynamics into energy and transport sector modelling tools.
Gerald is passionate about understanding how context-specific policies can deliver equitable energy transitions that reflect local realities and address the unique challenges faced by different communities. His research approach emphasises fostering meaningful collaborations with civil society organisations, government institutions, and policy actors to ensure that energy transition frameworks are not only academically rigorous but also practically implementable and socially just.
