Julia Tomei is co-lead of the Equity and Governance research community. She is Professor in Energy, Resources and Development at the UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources (UCL ISR) and her research addresses the complex interrelationships between energy and resources in low- and middle-income countries. This requires an interdisciplinary, international, and collaborative approach to problem identification with the aim of embedding just solutions fit for local realities. Indeed, she believes that it is only by drawing on local realities and concerns, and challenging dominant framings in resource politics and energy transitions, that transformative change will be possible.
Collaboration and equitable partnerships are at the core of Julia’s approach to research, which enables her to develop deep understandings of the contexts in which she works. Her research therefore engages with stakeholders from policy, academia, civil society and industry to examine the practical and policy mechanisms that can deliver transformative change. Julia draws on a range of social science theories and methods in her research and regards her experience and outlook as truly interdisciplinary. She has published more than 50 papers in leading peer-reviewed journals, including Nature Energy, The Lancet, and Energy Policy, and has worked in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
