The Ayrton-Oxford Academic Symposium took place 7-8 September. Day two saw CCG represented very strongly by its team members and colleagues. The session was introduced by Stephanie Hirmer from CCG and Oxford. Our colleague Martin Mutembei from Strathmore University and CCG Kenya shared his experiences of taking the support and tools offered by CCG, to make something independent and long lasting in Africa.
By incorporating CCG’s FlatPack curriculum into its own, Strathmore has created a Master’s course which is now producing future government employees who are trained in energy modelling as well as other climate issues. With this source of income from student fees, Strathmore has been able to develop its research capabilities and become an independent knowledge hub for the region, advising government on policy.
It has also supported other African universities such as Taita Taveta University to adopt the FlatPack and develop its teaching and research through the CLEWs Climate-, Land-, Energy-, Water-systems model. This is a brilliant example of Africans helping Africans, with no interference from the west.
Our colleagues from The Brew Hammond Energy Centre, KNUST were also at the event sharing their own journey with CCG tools, which has now established them as a centre that regularly brings together local experts, graduates and policy makers, to discuss and address the climate challenges of Ghana.
We were very happy to be joined by Youba Sokona from our Advisory Board, and Steven Hunt from the FCDO.
