Overview
The Energy Modelling Community (EMC) acts as a continuous support system for the alumni of Energy Modelling Platforms. By creating an ongoing network between EMP participants and instructors, the EMC ensures that alumni always have somewhere to turn with any technical queries regarding model usage. There are also opportunities for professional development aimed at preserving and enhancing their modelling skills.
EMC provides alumni with the following engagement opportunities:
- Webinar series covering the latest technical developments and applications,
- Troubleshooting sessions for specific tools,
- Clinics to present work in progress for peer feedback,
- A mentoring programme matching members at different career stages,
- Townhall meetings to allow members to shape the ongoing community,
- Regular newsletters providing updates on latest opportunities.

Besides these, the EMC also acts as a point of peer-to-peer learning, where alumni from various EMPs can interact informally, share ideas, and co-develop research.
The EMC is currently offered for OSeMOSYS, CLEWS, OnSSET and OnSTOVE, with future plans to expand coverage to MAED and FINPLAN.
Objectives

1. Build a Community Network

2. Provide Sustained Support beyond EMPs to Meet the Needs of Alumni

3. Integrate other Opportunities into Capacity Building

4. Create a Legacy and Sustained Network
EVENTS / LATEST NEWS
The EMC is featured in the new Data-to-Deal Step 2 Policy Brief which is one of seven launched at COP30 in Brazil in November. Here is the abstract from Step 2:
“This best practice brief presents Component 2 of the Data-to-Deal (D2D) framework which addresses Capacity. This component focuses on strengthening national capacity to conduct robust and inclusive planning processes for energy and transport that unlock climate-aligned investment in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). Many countries face persistent gaps in technical expertise, institutional coordination, and long-term continuity for planning.

Component 2 comprises three sub-components: (i) Assessing needs for capacity strengthening, (ii) Implementing targeted capacity development programmes, and (iii) Sustaining the gains in institutional capacity. The brief recommends demand-driven, iterative approaches that embed capacity within national institutions, prioritise trust-building and knowledge exchange across national institutions, and align closely with country-specific needs. Drawing on available diagnostic tools and recent country experiences, the brief outlines how ministries and planning agencies can select appropriate modelling toolkits, adopt standardised data practices, and integrate training into institutional structures. By operationalising this approach, countries can create a strong institutional foundation from which to advance the technical tasks associated with investment planning and finance.”

EMC FORUM
The EMC Forum is an online discussion forum and source of information for a range of energy modelling tools and related subject. You can get involved in discussions on: OnSSET, Onstove, NISMOD, EAE, MAED, OSeMOSYS, CLEWs, FlexTool, FFRM, MinFin, FINPLAN and FlatPack. Live (online) events are currently only being offered for OSeMOSYS, CLEWs and OnSSET but we hope to evolve that in time.
